Micro-Displays and Optics for Future Naval Helmet Mounted Displays

Existing Helmet Mounted Displays (HMDs) in Naval Aviation, such as the F/A-18 Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System and the F-35 Helmet Mounted Display, possess display and optical packages that are generally bulky and exhibit unfavorable center of gravity characteristics. This often results in pilot neck strain and other issues related to Color Information, Resolution, Field of View, and other pilot limitations. The government is seeking innovative solutions for integrated display/optical packages utilizing different combinations of micro-display and optical element technologies to address the pilot issues. Multiple prototype options from each member shall be proposed to determine the best solution. Each option shall be appropriate for both day and night operations and address some or all of the technology gaps.
